Women on the Move Leadership Program

Have you ever dreamed of going to school? Getting a job and being a leader in your community? For many women in an abusive relationship these achievements seem impossible, but thanks to The Women on The Move Leadership Program, women are discovering their own potential.

The Women on the Move Leadership Program offers women who have experienced abuse the opportunity to develop confidence, self-esteem, and leadership skills, while helping other women in their communities address violence against women. They courageously share their own stories to inspire and give hope to others living with abuse. These valuable experiences shape the way they think about themselves and they become aware of the options that await them and the change they can inspire in our communities.

The Women on the Move program is a year in length and is designed to support participants with their personal growth, goal development and community participation. The Women on the Move program consists of three major components. They are as follows:

Women take an in-depth look at their existing skills, goals and trauma associated with the violence they may have experienced. This allows women to develop effective coping strategies and set intentions for their future.

Women on the Move is a hands-on leadership model that provides the opportunity for women and girls to learn more about their strengths and how to build upon them in their personal and professional lives. Participants have the opportunity to improve their communication skills, public speaking, presentation delivery and group facilitation skills.

Participants receive valuable training and experience in order to work within their own communities to support women who may have experienced gender based violence. Participants accompany and take on a co-facilitator support role for members of The Redwood outreach team during workshops and community events as part of their training, sit on committees and put together workshop material to support women with discussing issues related to violence. This type of community involvement supports participants with developing their confidence while supporting others and helping to take preventative action against violence in their communities.

I want every woman and child who has suffered abuse to feel what it feels like to ‘shine bright’ again; to find that vitality within them and truly let it shine. I want them to know that their options are limitless, and that they can have all the joy and happiness imaginable. The Redwood makes all of this possible.

“WOTM has been truly an unforgettable experience. I would definitely recommend this program for other women, seeing as it changed my life for the better. I have to give the utmost credit to WOTM and The Redwood. It is because of this program that I now stand before you all stating in confidence that I am a success story.”

During their time at The Redwood a transformation occurs. The children laugh, play freely, talk about their experiences, and make great art. It’s so nice to see them again at this new stage of their lives. They are always doing so well.

The Redwood has a huge a place in my heart. And I am deeply moved by the courage, stamina and strength of the women and their children who seek its services. For me, it's a very inspiring place to be involved with.
